Old Fashioned

The daddy of all cocktails.  One of the oldest recorded (hence the name), and a classic to boot. And - damn - a mighty fine, squared-jawed drink it is too.

Although Matt2 prefers Woodford Reserve in his recipe, I favour the sweeter caramel overtones of the Four Roses. That said, I plan to try this with a good rye whisky soon, which may result in another recipe variation.

The larger the ice, the better.

Ingredients

  1. 1½ tsp

  2. 2

  3. 1

  4. 1 tsp

  5. 2 msr

The Marvellous Method

Add sugar, both bitters, a dash of water, and 1 measure of the  bourbon – stir one minute.

Add a large ice cube and stir for as long as you can bear.

Gradually add another measure of bourbon while stirring with ice and more bitters depending on your preference.

Garnish with a large slice of orange peel (mist the side of the glass if you can), a twist of lemon peel and a maraschino cherry.

Both Matthews are in agreement that this is their favourite cocktail. As such, both recipes are recorded. Click here to see the Marvellous Matt2 Method.
